How Released on Recognizance Works

When released on your own recognizance (ROR bond) you basically pay nothing and promise to return to court for all of your hearings. To get a released on recognizance bond truly you must show that you have some ties to the community within which you work or live, have a job, or go to school and have family close by or are supported by family.

These things make you eligible for an ROR bond, If you don’t have clear ties to the community you will most likely have to use a bail bondsman and pay them 10% of the bond. This can be expensive for some people. It’s best to have your attorney request no bond which is simply a released on recognizance bond (R.O.R bond). It also helps if you don’t commit any further violations of the law.

When Released on Recognizance (ROR) Bond and how it works

  • What is paid to the court?: No money is paid to the courts or police department, but the defendant promises to appear for future court proceedings. The accused also promises not to engage in any additional illegal activity. A traffic ticket is somewhat like being released on your own recognizance.
  • Who makes the payment?: No one – you simply sign and walk
  • What happens when all court appearances are made?: Nothing – their is no bond money to refund
  • What happens if the defendant fails to show up to court?: A bail amount will be set and a warrant could be issued for the defendants arrest. A defendant may then require the services of a bail bond company

When considering an released on recognizance you must really keep your word and also keep to your family. Don’t bother hanging out with friends or those who may cause you to break the law again. The next time you get arrested you won’t get an ROR bond, you’ll have to pay a cash bond putting yourself or family into debt.

  1. If the person is an asshole do they still get a released on recognizance bond? Does the judge make the determination that person is a jerk? My brother-in-law is a complete asshole and when he gets arrested he always gets that bond.

  3. I like the idea of not having to put money down for a release from jail. But I think some people should put up some cash. I see a lot of people running on tv and lots not getting caught for years. the money spent on trying to capture them and also all the court time and payroll to process warrants and overtime etc – should have just charged the criminal to get out of jail. Something enough to cover the costs if they run.

  4. You would really have to have a clean record in my town in order to be released (ror). If you even had a speeding ticket they would hold you until the next court date. The cops here are assholes and write people up for all kinds of dumb violations.

  5. If a person is released on their own recognizance what really do they need to do? Do they have to report to someone or should they have a bonding company standing by just in case a bond needs to be placed?
