About the Federal Bureau of Prisons
The Federal Bureau of Prisons was established in 1930 and is responsible for the care, custody and control of individuals convicted of federal offenses. The BOP operates institutions at various security levels and employs more than 35,000 staff.
Types of Federal Facilities
Penitentiaries (USP)
Maximum and high security facilities housing the most serious federal offenders.
Correctional Institutions (FCI)
Medium and low security facilities. The most common federal prison type.
Prison Camps (FPC)
Minimum security facilities for non-violent offenders nearing the end of their sentence.
Detention Centers (FDC/MDC)
House pre-trial detainees and those awaiting sentencing in major metropolitan areas.
