International Inmate Search FAQ

How do I find someone in a foreign prison?+
Start by selecting the country from our directory above. Each country page lists known facilities with contact information. For Mexico, the OADPRS national system is the most reliable starting point. For the UK, use the Prison Finder on gov.uk. For Australia, contact the relevant state corrections department directly. Many countries do not maintain centralized public inmate search systems, so contacting the facility directly is often the most reliable approach.
What should I do if a US citizen is arrested abroad?+
Contact the nearest US Embassy or Consulate immediately. The US State Department Citizens Emergency Center is available at 1-888-407-4747 from the US or +1-202-501-4444 internationally. Consular officers can visit detained Americans, provide lists of local attorneys, and notify family members. They cannot obtain someone's release or pay legal fees, but they ensure the person receives fair treatment under local law.
Can I visit someone in a foreign prison?+
Yes in most countries, but rules vary significantly by country and facility. You will generally need to be on an approved visitor list, provide government-issued photo ID, and comply with dress codes and item restrictions. Many countries require advance scheduling. JailGuide lists visitation information where publicly available on each facility page.
How do I send money to someone in a foreign prison?+
Each country has different rules. In Mexico, funds are typically deposited through Western Union or at designated bank branches using the inmate's facility number. In the UK, money is sent via the Prison Banking service online. In Australia, each state corrections department has its own approved payment method. Always contact the specific facility directly for their current accepted payment methods.
