Bowden Institution is a medium-security facility with a minimum-security Annex halfway between the communities of Innisfail and Bowden, Alberta. It opened in 1974 and can accommodate up to 455 inmates. Bowden Institution operates living units, a reception unit, dissociation/segregation beds and the Health Care Unit. The minimum-security Annex accommodates inmates in eight separate residences. The main programs at the institution include: substance abuse treatment, reasoning and rehabilitation, anger and emotions management, family violence and programs for sex offenders. The same programs are also available to Aboriginal offenders.
Drumheller Institution is a medium-security facility with a minimum-security Annex located on the outskirts of Drumheller, Alberta, a community of about 7,800. Drumheller Institution opened in 1967 and can accommodate up to 598 inmates. Medium-security inmates are housed mainly in four units. The Annex consists of nine living units with four shared bedrooms. Personal development programs and general and vocational education programs are available. Grande Cache Institution is a minimum-security facility, located roughly 445 km west of Edmonton, Alberta. It opened in 1995 and can accommodate up to 243 inmates. Inmates are housed in 13 living units. The Institution offers general and vocational education, as well as personal and interpersonal development programs, such as anger management and the Offender Substance Abuse Pre-Release Program. Programs oriented for Aboriginal offenders are also available.
The Grierson Centre is a minimum-security facility located in the Grierson Complex in Edmonton, Alberta and is the first urban facility. It opened in 1998 and can accommodate up to 30 inmates. The Centre offers various programs, together with a range of substance abuse control programs. Programs for Aboriginal offenders are also available through the Stan Daniels Healing Centre.
Pe Sakastew is a minimum-security facility located two km from downtown Hobbema, Alberta. It opened in 1997 and can accommodate up to 60 inmates. Inmates are accommodated in six houses, each with 10 beds. Pe Sakastew promotes a healing process based on Aboriginal culture for the successful reintegration of Aboriginal offenders.
Ferndale Institution is a minimum-security facility located three kilometres north of Mission, in the central Fraser Valley, and about 80 kilometres east of Vancouver. Ferndale opened in 1973 and can house up to 166 inmates. Offenders live in residential-style units, including two units for inmates on day parole. The Institution shares the penitentiary reserve with Mission Institution. Programs at Ferndale Institution are aimed at relapse prevention and skills development for effective reintegration into the community.
Fraser Valley Institution (FVI) is a multi-level facility for women located on a large penitentiary reserve that also includes other institutions (men's facilities). FVI is located in southern Abbotsford, about 60 kilometres east of Vancouver. FVI opened in 2004 and can house up to 80 inmates. Inmates live in six residential-style units. Programs focus on the particular needs of women offenders, including Aboriginal inmates and those with psychological problems or learning disabilities.
Kent Institution is a maximum-security facility located in the upper Fraser Valley, near Agassiz, British Columbia, about 140 kilometres east of Vancouver. Kent is the only maximum-security facility in the Pacific Region, and shares a federal reserve with Mountain Institution. Kent Institution opened in 1979 and can house up to 324 inmates. The Institution is equipped with regular and segregation cells, as well as cells at Health Services. Programs at Kent Institution are aimed mainly at correcting the behaviour that led inmates to be classified as maximum-security risks. Educational programs, as well as socialization and employment, play a large role at the Institution.
Kwikwexwelhp Healing Village is a minimum-security institution located about 140 kilometres east of Vancouver, British Columbia, on traditional Chehalis First Nation land. Formerly Elbow Lake Institution, the facility was renamed Kw�kw�xwelhp in 2001 and can house up to 50 inmates. The Institution provides programs and training to improve employment skills, including basic training, general training and correspondence courses, as well as various maintenance programs. Kwikwexwelhp, meaning �where medicine is collected,� is a correctional services centre for Aboriginal men that uses the traditions and holistic teachings of Aboriginal peoples and elders.
Matsqui Institution is a medium-security facility located about 70 kilometres from Vancouver. The Institution opened in 1966 and can house up to 350 inmates. Accommodations for the general population are provided in a three-story living unit with a central core of security control posts. Matsqui provides a number of basic programs, as well as vocational training programs and the Aboriginal Basic Healing Program, which focuses on First Nations.
Mission Institution is a medium-security facility located three kilometres north of Mission, in the central Fraser Valley, and about 80 kilometres east of Vancouver. The Institution opened in April 1977. Mission is comprised of five living units and is on the same site as Ferndale Institution. Inmates take part in educational, basic and employment programs. Mission is the first federal medium security institution to provide accredited programs.
Mountain Institution is a medium-security facility located in Agassiz, British Columbia. Mountain opened in 1962 and, following significant renovations, can now house up to 440 inmates. William Head uses an individual approach focused on basic programs.
Rockwood Institution is a minimum-security facility located about 11 km north of Winnipeg, near Stony Mountain Institution, in the rural municipality of Rockwood, Manitoba. It opened in 1962 and can accommodate up to 167 inmates. Inmates are housed in 25 living units.
Stony Mountain Institution is a medium-security facility located in Stony Mountain, Manitoba, about 11 km from Winnipeg. It opened in 1877 and can accommodate up to 506 inmates. The population is divided among five operational units offering various levels of supervision, including a healing unit for Aboriginal inmates (Ni-Miikana). Programs focus on living skills and treatment for substance abuse. A variety of programs are also designed for Aboriginal. Inmates can also acquire work experience and useful training in various workplaces within the Institution, including maintenance shops, food services, etc.
Atlantic Institution is a maximum-security facility, located in Renous, New Brunswick. It opened in 1987 and can accommodate up to 235 inmates. Inmates are housed in three living units and a 19-bed segregation unit. The Institution offers programs to address those inmate behaviours that, when corrected, will support the offender being reclassified to medium-security.
Dorchester Penitentiary is a medium-security facility, located in Dorchester, New Brunswick. It opened in 1880 and can accommodate 415 offenders. Dorchester Penitentiary is a special programs-oriented facility, housing the Shepody Healing Centre. Westmorland Institution is a minimum-security facility, located in Dorchester, New Brunswick. It opened in 1975 and can accommodate 252 inmates. The campus-style complex includes a number of row-houses for housing offenders, and a community building with staff office facilities. Westmorland Institution offers a range of personal development, academic and vocational programs.
Nova Institution is a multi-level facility, located in Truro, Nova Scotia and is one of five regional facilities for women across Canada. It opened in 1995 and can accommodate up to 70 inmates. The facility operates eight separate homes containing single-bedroom accommodations for between five to seven women per house. Two other living units operate to support the Intensive Intervention Strategy for Women for the purpose of providing additional mental health and security for those women who require it. The Structured Living Environment Unit (SLE) can accommodate up to eight offenders who require specific mental health intervention, while the facility�s Secure Unit can accommodate up to 10 maximum-security women. The Secure Unit also incorporates Nova's Segregation Unit which consists of three cells. Springhill Institution is a medium-security facility, located on a plateau overlooking the town of Springhill, Nova Scotia. It opened in 1967 and can accommodate 448 offenders. The facility also has the responsibility of operating a reception centre for the Atlantic region. Bath is a medium security institution on the north shore of Lake Ontario, approximately 20 kilometres west of Kingston. It is located on a federal reserve along with Millhaven Institution. Bath opened in 1972 and can accommodate up to 342 inmates. The inmates are housed in three units, two of which contain ranges and one which consists of 13 houses (expansion units). The Institution offers an open correctional environment that encourages offenders to take on greater responsibilities in day to day life. Beaver Creek Institution is a minimum security institution located within Gravenhurst, Ontario, on a federal reserve along with Fenbrook Institution. Beaver Creek opened in 1961 and can house up to 201 inmates. Inmates are housed in five residential style units. The Institution provides correctional programs that promote inmates� successful reintegration by allowing them to live independently and giving them responsibility for their needs. Inmates live in an environment with standards as similar as possible in a correctional setting to those in the community (i.e., preparing meals in small groups, being in charge of cleaning the units, etc.).

Collins Bay opened in 1930 and can accommodate up to 492 inmates. Inmates are housed in three units (including a segregation unit) and a transition unit.
