The house arrest of Colmar was originally an old monastery which was built in 1316.\nThe convent was transformed into a prison in 1791, with a workhouse, and finally restored in 1806.\nIt was not until 1919 that the institution has been recognized as a prison. This is a very old institution, comprising several buildings adjacent to the High Court and Court of Assizes. It is located in a tourist district of Colmar.

The central house of Ensisheim, located in the center of the city, covers an area of 1.82 ha.\nIt was created by imperial decree of 23 February 1811 in the buildings of the former workhouse opened in 1764 in place of a Jesuit monastery dating from the seventeenth century. It was the seat of a district prison from 1926 to 1944. In the nineteenth century, the central house, transformed by general contractors in textile factory, greeted the men sentenced to correctional imprisonment of more than a year, and sentenced to life imprisonment. After the close of the colonial prisons in 1938, convicts were sent to forced labor in Ensisheim to serve their sentence. In 1989, some buildings on fire during a riot by inmates was rebuilt.
