Cornton Vale provides custodial facilities and services for remanded and convicted females (including young offenders) in all sentence ranges and supervision levels. Other than the small units for females at Aberdeen, Dumfries, and Inverness, Cornton Vale was the Centre for female prisoners until November 2002. Due to the increasing numbers of women in custody, Darroch Hall at Greenock was allocated as a hall for short-term convicted adult female prisoners from Cornton Vale. This is now full to capacity and has eased the overcrowding at Cornton Vale.\n

Located in the West Side of Edinburgh on the main A71, the prison is in an area known locally as Saughton. The main telephone number of the establishment is 0131-444 3000 and the fax number is 0131-444 3045. The prison is situated in a predominately residential area and has good transport and road links to the city centre, which provides good access both for local courts and visitors to the prison. The building of the prison started in approximately 1914 with the first prisoner being received about 1920.\n\nEdinburgh Prison is classed as a local or community prison and receives prisoners from the courts in Edinburgh and the Lothian's and Borders. The prison holds adult male and under 21 prisoners who are on remand or convicted awaiting sentence, and convicted prisoners serving sentences from non-payment of fines to life.

Aberdeen is the local prison for the north-east of Scotland and the Northern Isles. The prison accommodates all remand prisoners and male adults serving sentences of up to 4 years.\n\nOther prisoners outwith these classifications received from court are housed and prepared for onward movement to appropriate establishments, although some prisoners are held out of classification where this meets the operational needs of the SPS.\n\nAberdeen is a short-term prison that holds prisoners of all supervision levels. The present design capacity of Aberdeen is 155. On Friday 28 December 2007 a total of 218 prisoners were held in the prison.

Glenochil is sited near Tullibody in central Scotland and holds long-term adult male prisoners with High, Medium and Low supervision security classifications. Prisoners are not committed to HMP Glenochil direct from the courts but are admitted following conviction, from other prisons, principally Barlinnie and Edinburgh. Glenochil provides a range of opportunities for addressing offending behaviour and for work and education.

Dumfries Prison serves the courts of Dumfries and Galloway. It holds up to 80 male prisoners who are remanded in custody for trial and those convicted but remanded for reports. Short-term convicted male prisoners may be retained at Dumfries or transferred to another establishment according to their length of sentence and the availability of spaces.\n\nDumfries Prison also provides a national mainstream facility for holding up to 120 long-term and short-term prisoners who require to be separated from mainstream prisoners because of the nature of their offence, termed as offence related protection prisoners.

HMP Kilmarnock is located 3 miles to the south-east of Kilmarnock. The prison is the first in Scotland to be built under the private finance initiative (PFI) and became operational on 25 March 1999. The prison is operated under a 25 year contract by Serco Home Affairs Division, on behalf of the Scottish Prison Service, and is in its 10th operating year.\n \nIt has 500 single cells with a contractual maximum capacity of 692 prisoners. With effect from 1 February 2003, 596 prisoner places have been available at HMP Kilmarnock.\n \nThe prison is a closed mainstream high security establishment, which operates a similar regime to that available elsewhere, including Shotts, Glenochil and Perth. It accommodates male adult prisoners � remands, short-term and long-term - and male young offender remands. Barlinnie Prison is situated on the outskirts of Glasgow but still close to the busiest courts in Scotland and close to population centres and public transport routes that allow ease of access for family visits. \n\nBarlinnie is Scotland�s largest, most complex penal establishment and holds all categories of prisoners. However, its main purpose is to hold remand and short term prisoners sent by the West of Scotland courts. We also hold a significant number of long term prisoners who have just been sentenced, are awaiting transfer to another establishment or are here for a specific management reason. \n\nBarlinnie also has a facility that holds protection prisoners and sex offenders who are separate from the main population. The segregation unit is available for both local prisoners and national prisoners from other establishments for a variety of management reasons.

The present prison was opened in 1902, having relocated from nearby Inverness Castle to what was, at that time, the rural parish of Porterfield.\n \nThere were 25 male and 10 female prisoners in accommodation comprising of 49 cells. Throughout its subsequent history the prison has had a mixed population of men and women, convicted and untried prisoners. Today, however, the numbers are significantly higher, averaging around 150, and the cellular capacity has risen to 104.\n \nThe accommodation halls within the confines of the original wall have changed internally over the past 100 years, although their facades have remained the same. HM Prison Shotts is a maximum-security prison for long term adult male prisoners. The prison is situated in countryside south of the M8 motorway near the Lanarkshire village of Shotts. Purpose built in 1978 it caters for long term male prisoners (sentences of 4 years & over) who are transferred from other establishments and who require to be kept secure conditions. HM Prison Shotts includes two national facilities within its establishment: the National Induction Centre and Kerr House.\nShotts seeks to provide a secure, safe and caring environment, while providing opportunities for prisoners to come to terms with their sentences and address their offending behaviour.

Perth holds short term (less than four years) local adult male prisoners, including fine defaulters, and those on remand from Tayside and Fife, including Kirkcaldy and Dunfermline Sheriffdoms. The establishment also accommodates in secure conditions long-term adult male prisoners including high supervision prisoners who are serving sentences of up to life imprisonment. Over the next three years it will concentrate on taking its long term prisoners from the North and East of Scotland. It also provides a national top end facility at Friarton for long term prisoners approaching the end of their sentence.

HMP Addiewell, Scotland's first new prison for almost 10 years opened on 12 December 2008. It has places for 700 prisoners and will be the most modern prison accomodation in Scotland. The Prison is situated near the villiage of Addiewell in West Lothian, four miles west of the town of Livingston. From Monday 02 Febraury 2009, it will become the local prison for the North and South Lanarkshire Courts. It will accept Adult Male convicted and untried prisoner admissions (including under 21-year old remands) from these courts.\n\nThe prison is being provided and operated under contract to the SPS by Kalyx, a private company, which is currently running a number of prisons in England on behalf of HMPS.
