Common questions about terms starting with G
What is a gag order and when is one issued? +
A gag order is a court order prohibiting parties, attorneys, witnesses, or other individuals from publicly releasing specific information about a case. They are most common in high-profile criminal cases where media coverage could prejudice a jury pool or compromise ongoing proceedings. Violating a gag order is contempt of court, which can result in fines or incarceration. Gag orders typically expire when the case concludes.
How does good time credit work in federal prison? +
Federal good time credit is governed by 18 U.S.C. Section 3624(b). Under the First Step Act of 2018, federal inmates can earn up to 54 days of good time per year of sentence imposed -- not per year served. The BOP calculates and tracks good time credit. It can be reduced or forfeited for disciplinary infractions. For a 5-year sentence, maximum good time works out to roughly 270 days off. Use the
good time calculator to estimate your release date.
What is the GED requirement in federal prison? +
Federal inmates who do not have a high school diploma or GED are required under the Literacy Program to participate in literacy and GED classes for a minimum of 240 hours or until they obtain their GED. Inmates who comply with the literacy requirement but have not yet passed the GED can still earn good time. Completion of the GED may improve eligibility for certain work assignments, educational programs, and in some cases early transfer to a lower security facility.
What triggers a prison lockdown vs a group disturbance response? +
A group disturbance -- four or more inmates acting together to disrupt facility operations -- typically triggers an immediate lockdown of the affected housing unit or the entire facility, an emergency count to verify all inmates are accounted for, and notification up the chain of command. The Emergency Response Team may be activated. If the disturbance involves weapons or injuries it is escalated to a riot response. Individual incidents or fights between two inmates are handled differently and generally do not trigger facility-wide lockdowns.
