The Arizona penitentiary system began in 1875 and has grown into a large public prison system to include private (for profit) prisons within the state. The number of prisons has expanded over the years from the original prison at Florence, to a total of ten large prisons in Arizona: ASPC Florence, ASPC Phoenix, ASPC Winslow, ASPC Eyman, ASPC Douglas, ASPC Perryville, ASPC Safford, ASPC Tucson, ASPC Yuma and ASPC Lewis. The Department also operates the Southern Arizona Correctional Release Center in Tucson for Women.

Additionally, there are five private, for-profit, prisons in Arizona which are monitored by the department, ASP Phoenix West, ASP Marana, ASP Florence West, ASP Kingman, and Central Arizona Correctional Facility (CACF) in Florence.

The Arizona Department of Corrections' responsibilities include the incarceration of over 34,000 inmates in Arizona prisons and also the supervision of over 4,000 inmates who are on parole or who have otherwise been released from prison before their full sentence has been served.
