Kentucky manages its correctional system through the Kentucky Department of Corrections (KDOC), operating state-run facilities including Kentucky State Penitentiary and Luther Luckett Correctional Complex.

The Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) Ashland is a low security institution housing male inmates with a satellite camp that houses minimum security inmates. The facility is located in the highlands of northeastern Kentucky, 125 miles east of Lexington and 5 miles southwest of Ashland.
The Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Manchester is a medium security facility housing male inmates. An adjacent satellite prison camp houses minimum security male offenders. FCI Manchester is located in Clay County in eastern Kentucky. The facility is located approximately 75 miles south of Lexington off Interstate 75, and 28 miles east of London on the Hal Rogers Parkway - formerly known as Daniel Boone Parkway.

Blackburn Correctional Complex serves as the Division of Adult Institutions' largest adult male minimum-security institution providing care, housing, custody, control, and�governmental services jobs to inmates. This facility is�located near Lexington, Kentucky.
Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex is a medium security institution located in the Appalachian Region of Morgan County in Eastern Kentucky.� Construction began in January 1986 with the ground breaking ceremony presided over by Governor Martha Layne Collins. In order to meet the growing need for inmate housing, the institution was designed to be completed in two phases. The first phase was completed and began receiving inmates in February 1990. Phase II was completed in December 1991. The cost of both phases was $72,979,200. A 50 bed minimum security unit exists outside the fence. The institution sits on 157 acres of land. The design received the 1990 Kentucky Society of Architects of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) Honor Award of Design Excellence.
The Frankfort Career Development Center is a 205-capacity minimum-security facility located in Frankfort. The majority of inmates are assigned to the Governmental Services Program Work Detail to provide a supplemental labor force for governmental agencies in the state capitol.
Green River Correctional Complex is a 982 bed medium / minimum security adult male correctional facility located in Central City, KY and operated by the Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet, Department of Corrections. Construction of GRCC was completed in 1994. The facility design is a direct supervision model, consisting of 3 medium security general population housing units with 444 double bunked cells, a maximum security segregation unit with 44 single bunked cells, and a 50 bed open dorm style minimum security unit.
KCIW is considered multi-custody as differential housing and programming must meet the needs of females serving from one year to life, death row, maximum, medium, minimum, community custody, first offenders, persistent offenders, the disabled and special needs inmates.
The Kentucky State Penitentiary, located near Eddyville in Lyon County, is the Department's oldest and only maximum security facility. This facility houses Kentucky's Death-Row inmates.
The Kentucky State Reformatory operates under a unit management system with five (5) separate living units. The Unit Management Program is designed to foster personal relationships in smaller groups and assure inmates access to staff who are familiar with their needs. An inmate may seek personal counseling from any member of the Unit Team, which consists of a Unit Manager, an Assistant Unit Manager (if designated for the unit), Classification and Treatment Officers, and Correctional Officers. The Unit Team assists with institutional programming, case preparation for the Parole Board, classification reviews, developing release plans and problem solving. By utilizing a multi-dimensional approach, the issues of sanitation, discipline and security are well managed and problems are more easily isolated so they do not spread.
The Lee Adjustment Center (LAC) opened in 1990 as a 400-bed minimum security prison under contract with the Kentucky Department of Corrections.� Corrections Corporation of America (CCA), the industry leader in private sector corrections, has owned and managed the Lee Adjustment Center since 1998.� In 1999, the prison was converted from a 500-bed minimum security prison to a 500-bed medium security prison.� In 2004, the prison is contracted to house up to 390 medium security inmates
Little Sandy Correctional Complex is a medium security institution located in Elliott County. It is the state's newest and most technologically advanced institution. Construction began in December 2001 with the ground breaking ceremony. The institution began receiving its first female inmates in May 2005. Male inmates began arriving on July 15, 2005 and by September 2005 all female inmates were transferred.A total of 1010 inmates are currently housed in two living units at Little Sandy Correctional Complex. Our housing also includes a 100 bed minimum security unit and a 90 bed special management unit. There are numerous support buildings including academic and vocational schools, a medical unit, inmate canteen, correctional industries, a gym, dinning facility and maintenance area.
The physical plant consists of five living units, a 44-bed special management unit, a 16-bed minimum-security unit, numerous support buildings including academic and vocational schools and indoor recreation areas.� The living units are broken down into three different categories:� general population, meritorious housing and one dormitory being utilized as a therapeutic community type setting for inmates enrolled in the Substance Abuse Program.� Perimeter security consists of 14 foot high fencing with electronic sensors topped by razor wire, monitored by four fixed security tower positions supplemented by a mobile perimeter patrol.��
Kentucky led the nation by contracting the first private minimum security prison in the country, this 826-bed facility in Marion County. Marion Adjustment Center (MAC) is located seven miles from Lebanon, Kentucky. Lebanon, the county seat of Marion County, is located three miles southeast of the geographic center of the state of Kentucky.
General population inmates are housed in six open-bay dormitories.� Special Management Unit inmates are housed in single cells in a 60-bed structure separated from the main compound.� The perimeter of the secure compound is a double 12-foot fence, with razor wire on the bottom and top.� The inner perimeter fence has a sensor system that alerts the main control in the event of contact, 4 armed wall towers, an outside patrol, and a control center.� Minimum-Security inmates, numbering approximately 40, are housed in�two structures outside the secure perimeter.
Otter Creek Correctional Center is located in the town of Wheelwright, Kentucky, with a population of 1,048 (as of the 2000 census). Wheelwright is a historic coal mining camp town, characterized by coal camp town \"row houses.\" Wheelwright's rural beauty is offset by its remoteness, the nearest large city being an hour's drive from Wheelwright. After the consolidation of two local high schools, the CCA facility is now by far the largest employer in the town. This prison is owned and run by CCA.
The physical plant consists of a total of one thousand two (1002) beds. Seven hundred thirty (730) medium security beds are within the fenced perimeter. One hundred (100) of these medium custody inmates are permanently assigned inmates, which provide support services for the institution. These inmates provide the basic services to the institution such as Food Service, Laundry, Legal Aide Office, Grievance Office, Janitorial, etc. The remaining six hundred thirty (630) medium security beds are utilized to house inmates entering the system as part of the Assessment Center for the Department of Corrections. There are currently two hundred seventy-two (272) minimum custody beds located outside the fence. Two hundred (200) minimum custody inmates are participating in the Substance Abuse Program. The remaining seventy-two (72) minimum custody inmates also provide support services for the institution such as Maintenance, Warehouse, Horticulture Program, and the Farm Operation.���
The Western Kentucky Correctional Complex, located in Lyon County, is a 673 man medium security facility which includes a 180-bed minimum security unit. The minimum security inmates maintain a 2,300 acre farm and provide several community work details.
