The first Colorado penitentiary opened January 7, 1868. Since then the Colorado Department of Corrections has grown to 19 public prison facilities and using 4 private (for-profit) prisons. For over 130 years the Colorado Department of Corrections (DOC) has worked to serve the citizens of Colorado by maintaining and enhancing public safety. Currently over 6700 correctional professionals supervise more than 23,000 offenders within the Colorado DOC placements.
