Apalachee Correctional Institution was established in 1949 as a Youthful Offender facility. In 1959, the name was changed to East Unit when the Prison Labor Camp was acquired from the Division of Mental Health and the new property was designated as West Unit. In 1990 the profile was changed to adult males. River Junction Work Camp is under supervision of Apalachee CI.

This facility was originally established as the Prison Labor Camp under the Division of Mental Health to grow food and provide labor support for the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee. In 1959 the facility was incorporated with Apalachee Correctional Institution and was designated as West Unit. It continued to house adult males and the farm program grew until in 1985 the Department of Corrections entered a lease agreement with PRIDE to manage all lands not essential for the operation of the institution (approx. 7000 acres). Central Florida Reception Center opened in August of 1988 originally as Orange Correctional Institution. Orange C.I. was opened as a close custody, adult male, program oriented institution. Before OCI was fully functional, the mission was changed to a reception center, and thus the new name of Central Florida Reception Center. Today CFRC houses male inmates. Bridges of Orlando Work Release Center, Kissimmee Work Release Center, Orlando Transition Center, Orlando Work Release Center, and The Transition House, Inc. are under the supervision of CFRC.

As of January 1, 2003, under the Florida Career Offender Registration Act, a select group of convicted felons, the \"worst-of-the-worst\", are required to register their residences with law enforcement and a state registry maintained by FDLE , the Career Offender Application for Statewide Tracking (COAST). These offenders, by virtue of their histories of offenses, present a threat to the public and to communities. This registration law will assist law enforcement agencies in timely apprehending a career offender, if a career offender engages again in criminal conduct. Registration is not a punishment, but merely a status. Failure of a Career Offender to register their residence is a third degree felony. The Florida Department of Corrections is the third largest state prison system in the country with a budget of $2.4 billion, just over 100,000 inmates incarcerated and another 158,000 offenders on some type of community supervision.The Florida Dept of Corrections has 139 facilities statewide, including 60 prisons, 41 work/forestry camps, one treatment center, 30 work release centers and five road prisons. About three quarters of its staff of more than 26,000 employees are either certified correctional officers or probation officers. The average DC employee is 41 years old and has been with the agency for almost nine years. There were no prison escapes from a major prison last fiscal year.

What is now Union Correctional Institution was the original Florida State Prison and what is now known as Florida State Prison was constructed with the death chamber in 1961. The oldest state facility for women was opened in April 1956 as Florida C.I., housing all custody levels including death row. Florida C.I. originally functioned as the only reception center for female offenders. In 1973 Florida C.I. obtained the Forest Hills School for Girls from the Department of Health and Rehabilitative Services, which is located on the same property. This unit was utilized as a minimum custody open compound styled facility housing around 300 female inmates. The Forest Hills Unit was closed in 1997 for renovation. Levy Forestry Camp was added to Florida C.I. in 1995 as a work camp for female offenders. Its primary mission is labor for the Division of Forestry. In July 1997 C.A.M.P. Jones was opened as the only \"boot camp\" styled program for youthful offender females in Florida. In 1998 it was combined with Marion C.I. and in 1999 the name was changed to Lowell C.I./Women's Unit and in 2000 to Lowell C.I. The International Exposition Center, which is a joint venture between the Department of Corrections and the Department of Agriculture for the purpose of housing and showing cattle, is under the supervision of Martin C.I. Ft. Pierce Work Release Center is also under the supervision of Martin.

The mission of New River C.I. is to provide and protect the public safety, to ensure the safety of Department personnel, and to provide proper care and supervision of all offenders under our jurisdiction while assisting, as appropriate, their reentry into society.

The New River CI \"O\" Unit was originally established in the early 1960's as part of Florida State Prison. In July 2003, the \"O\" Unit merged with New River CI and later, in 2006, it was returned to Florida State Prison, then in 2009, it again became part of New River CI. The New River C.I. O-Unit is utilized as a work camp, housing minimum and medium custody inmates.

This facility was established in 1968 to house male inmates. Originally named the Reception and Medical Center, the primary functions are to process newly committed male inmates into the state correctional system and to provide primary medical care to inmates within the state system. There are two other units located at this facility (The RMC-West Unit and the RMC Hospital). The RMC-West Unit has a capacity of 999 inmates. The RMC Hospital is a licensed 120 bed hospital for acute care. RMC also maintains a 28 bed unit at Memorial Hospital in Jacksonville. In July of 1972, the East Unit became a separate institution and was renamed Florida State Prison. The original Florida State Prison became Union Correctional Institution. In 1975, a \"modern\" new housing area, consisting of thirteen separate units, was constructed and designated the Southwest Unit. In 1985, the Southeast Unit was completed and \"The Rock\" was simultaneously closed by federal court order. In 1992, a new Death Row housing unit was built and inmates relocated from Florida State Prison. Currently Union C.I. houses adult male inmates.This facility was established in 1913 as temporary stockades to house infirmed inmates who could not be leased to private businesses. At that time the institution, called the State Prison Farm housed approximately six hundred inmates, both male and female. This facility was established in the 1930's as a road prison. In 1972 it was converted to a work release center. In 1977 it was converted to a major institution and expanded to house adult male inmates. In October 1999, Zephyrhills CI took on the corrections mental health institution mission.

The Department of the Jail is a 920 bed, 314,000 square foot facility which incarcerates adult male and female offenders for up to one year. The core facility was completed in January 1994.In 2007, two renovations were completed which added 60 additional beds to the facility (40 beds in C Zone and 20 beds in D Zone). This raised the number of beds to 980; and, with a classification factor of 15%, the optimal number of inmates to be housed is 833. In addition, groundbreaking has been held for a new 168 bed addition, which should be completed by the Fall of 2008. This will increase the total number of beds to 1,148; and, after a classification factor of 15%, the optimum number of inmates that can be housed after the new construction is completed is 975.

The�Booking and Release Center (BRC) with a design capacity of 592 beds�is the intake point for all persons arrested by all law enforcement agencies in Orange County. Inmates are processed, screened, classified and have their initial court appearance in this facility. All inmates being released from the Orange County Jail System are released through the public lobby of the BRC.

The Brevard County Jail Complex is owned and maintained by the Board of County Commissioners and is operated by the Sheriff. The Jail is accredited through the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission.The main jail opened in 1986 with beds for 386 inmates. Today, the Jail Complex routinely houses over 1,800 inmates daily with 1,321 permanent inmate beds. The Jail Complex consists of a Booking area, Housing areas, Medical Ward, Laundry facility, Courtroom, Visiting areas, Recreation area, and office/support areas. In addition to the maximum security main jail there are three tents housing inmates (with a fourth tent to open in 2008), a Women's Jail, and a mental health/medical facility to also open in 2008. The Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office Central Detention Center, formerly known as the Stockade, it is situated on a twenty-acre complex on Fairgrounds Road in suburban West Palm Beach. The facility was originally constructed in 1954 to house 56 county sentenced inmates under the operation of the Palm Beach County Department of Public Safety. The Central Detention Center has undergone expansion each decade since and currently houses inmates of minimum, medium, and maximum custody levels in ten separate buildings with a capacity of 989 inmates. Currently, additional construction and expansion are also underway. In 1977 control of the Central Detention Center was assumed by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office and it is currently the 2nd largest of the counties three correctional facilities.

Housed within BSO's Main Jail Bureau, the Central Intake Unit handles booking, records maintenance, release, transport, temporary housing and court activities of inmates within the Broward County jail system. Three satellite booking facilities, located throughout the county, also process inmates who are then transferred to the Main Jail pending court hearings. The Central Intake Unit handles bookings for all Broward County law enforcement agencies.The facility also operates the Juvenile Intervention Facility, oversees the Baker Act and Confinement Status units and provides security details for medical transports.

The Charlotte County Jail is located at 26601 Airport Road in South Charlotte County and is designed to house 608 inmates. The facility opened in February of 2001 and is a direct supervision jail. A direct supervision jail differs from the conventional approach because the officer is stationed inside the housing unit. This concept encourages direct interaction between staff and inmates to prevent negative behavior, and it groups inmates into living units that can house up to 84 inmates that can be efficiently managed. The jail is a full service facility with kitchen, laundry, medical and dental services. The facility is equipped with a video courtroom for first appearances, arraignments and bond hearings. The facility is accredited through the Florida Corrections Accreditation Commission and the National Commission on Correctional Health Care. The Facility is recognized as meeting the Florida Jail Model Standards and applicable Florida Statutes.

The Community Release Center is a 92 bed facility which houses male inmates who are sentenced to the county jail for 364 days or less. Inmates housed in this facility are allowed to participate in the work release program; provided they meet the facility criteria or they will be assigned to a county work squad.

This facility houses county sentenced male and female inmates participating in the Work Furlough and Substance Abuse Treatment programs and some county sentenced inmates assigned to this facility.

All female inmates, including female juveniles who are being tried as adults, are held in this facility. The Female Detention Center became operational in March of 2003. It is a 652-bed facility consisting of both max-level lockdown cells and direct-supervision dormitories.

The Flagler County Inmate Facility is comprised of four housing units with a rated capacity of 132 inmates. The inmate population is made up of sentenced and non-sentenced inmates who are incarcerated for any number of crimes ranging from theft and trespassing to drug trafficking and murder.

Committed to the county jail are prisoners who may be charged with any type of crime or violation, including homicide, rape, DUI, trespass, etc. The Sheriff is responsible to assure that all prisoners are kept secure and properly cared for. The Genesis Facility was opened in 1988 and is the oldest of the secured, direct supervision jails at the 33rd Street Corrections Complex. Genesis currently houses 220 inmates.�

The Joseph V. Conte Facility is a male, medium-custody facility housing mainly inmates awaiting trial. Conte is a direct supervision facility, meaning deputies are stationed inside the housing units and interact directly with inmates. Meals, recreation, counseling, treatment programs and medical care are provided within the housing units, eliminating the need to escort inmates to other areas to receive them. The Conte Facility is program intensive and includes 30 and 60 day substance abuse programs, the court ordered ISAP and ATACC programs, as well as various educational programs.Built at a cost of $25.5 million, the facility houses 1,328 inmates and is staffed by 231 law enforecement and civilian personnel.The facility is named for Joseph Conte, a 47-year-old BSO detention deputy, killed in the line of duty in July 1979.

The Main Jail is an eight-story maximum security facility adjacent to the Broward County Courthouse in downtown Fort Lauderdale. Built in 1985 at a cost of $41.6 million, it was originally designed to house 864 local and state inmates. In 1988 and again in 1992, capacity was expanded to 1,538 inmates. More than 400 sworn and civilian staff supervise the facility which also includes Central Intake (inmate booking) for all Broward County law enforcement agencies, pre-magistrate, Centralized Classification Intake assessment for all BSO detention facilities, an infirmary and administrative offices.An all-male facility, most inmates are awaiting trial or sentencing, or are serving terms of less than one year. The inmates housed in the Main Jail are considered escape risks, violent or dangerous, or by the nature of their charges require maximum security housing. The Corrections Bureau is responsible for providing the care, custody and control of the inmates incarcerated in the Marion County Jail.� The jail exists for the detention of persons as required by law. Confined in the jail are persons serving time for crimes for which they have been convicted, and others who are awaiting trial, transfer to other county or municipal facilities, or transfer to the state prison system. In keeping with the philosophy of the Marion County Sheriff�s Office, convicted prisoners are sentenced to jail as punishment, not for punishment, and will be treated in such a manner as to provide maximum security without undue discomfort. The Minimum Security Annex is a reduced-cost solution for Pasco County's ever-increasing inmate population problem. The building is a tensioned-membrane structure that is designed to withstand 110 mile per hour winds. It can house up to 96 inmates who are either awaiting trial or serving minor sentences for non-violent, misdemeanor crimes. The building is a state-of-the-art facility that has its own showers, bathrooms and recreational area which are separate from the main detention center structure. It can be disassembled and moved to a new site in the future if needed.� More than $18,000 worth of inmate labor was used in the construction of peripheral elements of the MSA. The MSA facility has passed a state-mandated review by Florida Model Jail Standards inspectors.

The North Broward Bureau is a minimum to medium security, special needs detention facility housing male and female offenders. The facility also houses protective custody female offenders and female juveniles. The facility currently holds 1,200 inmates.The primary mission of the facility is to house and manage the mentally ill, medically infirm and special needs inmate population.

The Osceola County Correctional Facility was constructed in 1986, and renovated during 1998 and 1999. The renovations included the refurbishing of the administrative, intake and medical areas, along with the addition of two direct supervision areas, multi-purpose areas and a kitchen. The main facility has 723 beds. In 1999, an existing building was renovated to become a Work Release Center, with 48 beds and a 120-bed dormitory-style housing area for minimum security inmate workers. The medical unit has two negative air flow cells, six segregation cells, ten beds in the male medical bay and two beds in the female medical bay. The facility has a total bed capacity of 873, including medical and temporary segregation units.

The main Pasco County Detention Center, located at 20101 Central Blvd. in Land O' Lakes, was dedicated on March 1, 1991. The detention center, including Sheriff's Office administrative sections, contains 224,330 square feet.This center is a two-story, reinforced masonry facility consisting of three inmate housing pods and a central administrative and support core. Each housing unit contains a total of 96 cells divided into six 16-cell units, each with a dayroom space. Each pod has one handicap cell, with one pod containing eight cells designated for higher risk inmates. All cells are equipped with double bunks. The facility has been designed for expansion with the future addition of three housing pods, for an ultimate capacity of about 1,500 inmates.

The Broward Sheriff's Office's newest detention facility opened in February 2004. Modeled after BSO's Joseph V. Conte Facility in Pompano Beach, the $36.6 million complex is a direct supervision jail where staff works more closely with inmates and inmate movement is kept to a minimum.Designed to handle 1,020 inmates in two four-story towers, the 257,790 square foot medium / maximum security jail houses male and female inmates in separate areas.The Paul Rein Detention Facility, like all the BSO jails, provides inmates with nearly two-dozen different specialty diets including Kosher, vegetarian, high-calorie and low-calorie, prepared daily to meet the needs of the prisoners.Because of direct supervision, higher security risk inmates don't have to leave their housing unit for visitation. A non-breakable window separates the housing unit from a visitation area and inmates and visitors can talk on a built-in telephone.

The Phoenix Facility was completed in 1993 and�has a�design capacity�of 288�inmates.

The Detention and Corrections Bureau of the Pinellas County Sheriff's Office, commanded by Major Alexis Davis, is comprised of six major components - the North, South, Central, Corrections Special Operations, Support, and the Inmate Healthcare divisions.

The Central County Jail (formerly the Annex) was constructed in 1985 and 1988 at a cost of $17.5 million and houses maximum, medium and minimum custody inmates. The Sarasota County jail has a state of the art medical facility that allows inmates to be treated by trained doctors and nurses on site. It also consists of two floors of administrative offices, food facilities (which feeds an average of 750 inmates, three times daily), and three floors to house inmates. The North Wing will have 6 \"Pods\" that will house 48 inmates each - 288 total inmates. Direct Supervision is a concept that places the Corrections Deputies inside of the inmate housing pod. This fairly new concept has been proven to be more effective in allowing Correctional Officers to meet the mission statement of providing a safe, clean and quiet environment for inmates and staff.The East and West Wings utilize linear supervision to supervise inmates. The West Detention Center is located in Belle Glade, Florida, forty-five miles west of PBSO Headquarters in West Palm Beach. The West Detention Center houses all custody levels to include minimum, medium and maximum custody inmates. The facility was originally constructed and opened in 1983 with a bed capacity of 103 and was expanded in 1997 to its present capacity of 256 beds. The division operates as a \"stand alone\" facility, encompassing all aspects of a county detention facility including property, intake, booking and release, as well as classification, visitation and inmate housing.

The Women's Detention Center has 375 beds. It averages a daily population of between 300-375 female inmates. Inmates held at this facility vary from pre-trial detainees to sentenced inmates. Women's Detention Center is an accredited facility.
