The facility is located one mile east of El Dorado on State Highway 54. The correctional facility has 427 full-time employees and has an operating budget of $22.3 million dollars. The average cost to house an inmate for one year at EDCF is $22,837. EDCF is a multi-custody correctional facility with a capacity to house 1,350 inmates and it is designed to house special management, maximum-, medium-, and minimum-custody inmates. Inmates assigned to the Central Unit are usually repeat offenders with a history of violent behavior.

The Ellsworth Correctional Facility (ECF) was approved for construction by the 1986 Legislature and was designed to house 226 minimum security inmates.The facility is now located on a 68.6-acre site and currently provides housing for 832 multi-custody inmates.The Ellsworth Correctional Facility is located in the northwest portion of the City of Ellsworth, Kansas. The facility is near the Ellsworth Municipal Airport at the intersection of Old Highway 40 Road and State Street. The intersection is � mile west of the junction of K-14 and K-140 or 1 mile west of the junction of K-156 and K-140. The City of Ellsworth is located on K-156 (approximately 11 miles south of I-70) and K-14 (approximately 8 miles south of I-70).

The Kansas State Penitentiary, whose name was legislatively changed to the Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) on June 18, 1990, is the state's largest complex for detention and rehabilitation of adult male felony offenders. The complex consists of the Central Unit, which includes an 11-acre maximum security facility, and a 46-acre medium security facility, and the East Unit which is an 85-acre minimum security facility. Currently, the inmate population is capped at 2,489. Within the LCF complex, there are�four custody levels of inmates housed at the Lansing Correctional Facility, to include: special management, maximum, medium, and minimum custodies.

Construction of the 150-bed facility began on the grounds of the Larned State Hospital (LSH) in January 1991, and the facility was dedicated in December of that same year.� The facility received its first inmates on January 22, 1992.� LCMHF houses the most severely and persistently mentally ill inmates within the Kansas Department of Corrections, along with a significant number of inmates with borderline personality disorders or a conduct disorder which makes them an unacceptable risk for housing in another facility.The LCMHF West Unit, a building previously occupied by Larned State Hospital, is a minimum-custody facility housing up to 218 male offenders. These inmates are placed at the West Unit not for mental health treatment, but to provide support services to LCMHF and LSH, holding jobs that simulate the regular hours and routines usually associated with employment found in the community. Services include work in food service, laundry, maintenance, grounds-keeping, and various other areas.

Wichita Work Release Facility (WWRF), a part of the Winfield Correctional Facility, is an all-male, minimum-custody state prison located in Wichita in south-central Kansas.� The purpose of the work release program is to prepare selected�inmates for release and to assist them in making a successful transition from the institutional environment back into free society.� Work release offers a unique opportunity to realize correctional objectives while permitting the participants to leave confinement and work in the community under close supervision and structure.

The current Butler County Detention Facility opened in January of 2003. It is a modern 250-bed facility located one mile east of El Dorado, south of US Highway 54 on Stone Road. The facility employees 61 full time detention officers and houses inmates from not only Butler County, but also supplies beds to the US Marshals Service, Immigration and Naturalization Service, and various other outside agencies.

The Jail is staffed 24 hours per day, seven days a week. When a prisoner is brought to the Jail they are processed. If the charges are bondable, they are given the opportunity to do so before being placed in population. If they are charged with a felony, they are held in Jail until they have the opportunity to see the judge unless a bond has been previously set.

Construction on the New Detention Center began in 1989 and opened its doors in February 1990. Since then, more than 100,000 individuals have been booked in and out of the Center. It contains bed space for 289 males and 38 females. When the facility hits maximum capacity, individuals are sent to and housed at other counties . The detainee population consists mostly of pre-trial offenders, which means that they are awaiting trial and sentencing on the offense for which they are being prosecuted. After their trials, depending on the severity of their defenses, they serve their time at the Wyandotte County Detention Center or at a State facility.
