Community corrections is an integral component of the Bureau's correctional programs. Community corrections staff develop and administer contracts for community-based correctional programs and serve as the Bureau's local liaison with the Federal courts, the U.S. Marshals Service, state and local corrections, and a variety of community groups.
Approximately 15 percent of the Bureau's inmate population are confined in secure facilities operated primarily by private corrections companies and to a lesser extent by state and local governments, and in privately-operated community corrections centers. Contract facilities help the Bureau manage its population and are especially useful for meeting the needs of low security, specialized populations like sentenced criminal aliens. Staff of the Correctional Programs Division in Central Office provide oversight for privately-operated facilities.

The Tower was named after Deputy Ken Wimberly who was tragically killed in the line of duty. This new construction is part of the expansion plan for the Gwinnett County Jail. Overcrowding at the original direct supervision facility forced the county to add more bed space to the existing site. The first was the completion of the \"Wimberly\" Tower and the second will be an additional tower at some future date. The first inmates were moved into the first floor of this four-level building on October 23, 2007. On February 27 of 2007, the remaining inmates who had been housed out to other agencies due to overcrowding were brought back to Gwinnett and housed in the new tower.
