About Louisiana's Correctional System
Louisiana has one of the highest incarceration rates in the nation. The Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections (DPSC) manages state institutions including Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola, one of the largest maximum security prisons in the US.

The Federal Correctional Institution (FCI) in Oakdale, LA houses low security male inmates. It is part of the Oakdale Federal Correctional Complex (FCC). FCI Oakdale is located in central Louisiana, 35 miles south of Alexandria and 58 miles north of Lake Charles.
The Federal Correctional Institution in Pollock, Louisiana, is a medium security institution housing male offenders. This institution is part of the Federal Correctional Complex (FCC), Pollock. FCI Pollock is located in central Louisiana and is surrounded by the Kisatchie National Forest in southeastern Grant Parish, Louisiana. The facility is situated approximately 15 miles north of Alexandria, Louisiana.
The Federal Detention Center (FDC) in Oakdale, LA is an administrative facility housing male pretrial and holdover inmates. It is part of the Oakdale Federal Correctional Complex (FCC). An adjacent satellite prison camp houses minimum security male inmates. FDC Oakdale is located in central Louisiana, thirty-five miles south of Alexandria and fifty-eight miles north of Lake Charles.
The United States Penitentiary (USP) in Pollock, Louisiana, is a high security institution housing male offenders. This institution is part of the Federal Correctional Complex (FCC), Pollock. ALC is publically owned and privately managed by The GEO Group, Inc. In addition to offering basic substance abuse education and prevention opportunities, ALC collaborates in the �District Attorney�s Drug Abuse Pre-Intervention Program� for first-time youthful offenders and the �District Attorney�s Intervention Rap Session� for older offenders on the verge of imprisonment. In both programs carefully selected inmate peer trainers talk about the things offenders can face in prison.
PCC is the second oldest state prison facility in Louisiana. Originally accredited by American Correctional Association 1994. PCC houses Medium and Minimum custody inmates.
The Dr. Martin L. Forcht, Jr., Clinical Treatment Unit (FWCC) is a satellite facility located in the old Caddo Correctional Center near Shreveport. The 572-bed facility houses aged and infirm offenders from throughout the system and is also site of the north Louisiana IMPACT unit and the Wade Reception and Diagnostic Center (WRDC). Expansions currently underway will add a 50-bed skilled nursing unit and a new 80-bed dorm for IMPACT.
Originally accredited by American Correctional Association in 1993. LCIW houses Maximum, Medium, and Minimum custody inmates. Because LCIW is the only state prison for females, the institution has designated space for new offender intake, Death Row, IMPACT (boot camp), and residential substance abuse treatment.
ALC utilizes an aggressive classification procedure that incorporates a multifaceted process whereby individual inmates are assisted in correcting their anti-social behavior. The process spans reception, orientation, treatment planning and programming, progress assessment, reclassification, as well as preparation for release and reintegration into the community. Program staff provides a wide range of interdisciplinary services to the offender to include medical, psychiatric, psychological, social, religious, vocational, educational, and recreational programs and services within the context of the total correctional system. Another aspect of ALC's mission is to provide an effective classification program, which utilizes all of these modes of corrections, depending on each offender's needs.
Originally accredited by American Correctional Association in 1994. LSP houses Maximum, Medium, and Minimum custody inmates. Death Row houses inmates sentenced by the courts to die by lethal injection. More than 80 inmates are presently on death row. The R. E. Barrow Treatment Center is a fully staffed medical facility; its treatment capacity is enhanced through telemedicine. The David C. Knapps Training Academy is Basic Training site for many of the new correctional officers in the state system and for Angola�s own extensive in-service training program.
The Steve Hoyle Rehabilitation Center (SHRC), a satellite facility in Tallulah, has a capacity of 260 inmates. The unit is organized as a therapeutic community to house and treat offenders with multiple DWI convictions or other substance abuse histories. The intensive 12- to 24-month treatment program consists of multiple phases promoting behavior modification supported by reintegration, relapse prevention, and aftercare services.
WNC, managed by Corrections Corporation of America, was the first privately managed prison in Louisiana and the first privately managed medium-security prison in the United States. Originally accredited by American Correctional Association in 1991. WNC houses Maximum, Medium, and Minimum custody inmates. WNC is site of the state�s only Prison Industry Enhancement (PIE) program in which inmates work for actual wages in a garment factory at the prison producing consumer safety apparel.
The Caddo Correctional Center is a full service jail rated at a capacity of 1070 beds. Designed to successfully manage large number of inmates with a minimum of personnel, the Caddo Correctional Center is the largest jail in the Ark-La-Tex and the only \"direct supervision\" facility in the State of Louisiana.

The services provided the Criminal Justice System are primarily logistical including the housing and supervision of offenders, sentencing options/reports, and intelligence information. The most obvious services we provide offenders are risk management programs; these programs are targeted at criminogenic needs and are designed to reduce the likelihood of re-offending.

The prison does have several programs in place which strive to help these inmates to learn the error of their ways and to become viable parts of the community upon their release. These programs include a GED program which enables the inmates to earn a high school equivalency diploma, physical fitness programs and an extensive library. The prison also features it's own chapel to stress to the inmates the value of virtue, and to provide them with a place to reflect upon their wrongdoings.�
